When it is not only economic and social/language barriers that keep people from access to medical care, but also raw geography--in this case, miles of near-vertical mountain ranges covered with dense jungle--accident and illness can exact a heavy toll. We were told that about 7 kids had died from diarrheal and respiratory disease in the past year, making the child mortality rate in the community about 5%. 5% of the community's children died last year from easily preventable and treatable conditions. This is unacceptable. We are determined for this NOT to happen again this year, or any other year for that matter. This is our second clinic here, 6 months after we first visited La Sabana.
