One Hillcrest High School student is still hospitalized after an car accident last week that resulted in the loss of one of her legs. Seventeen-year-old Jennifer Abbett was standing outside of the D&G Grocery Store on Bear Creek Road last Wednesday when a truck hit her and pinned her to a steel post. Abbett was air-lifted to UAB Medical Center where her family says she has been in and out of surgery ever since. Abbett's family says they have practically moved into the hospital waiting room since the accident, and they haven't been alone. They say the room has been filled each night with Jennifer's friends, classmates, and teachers. Several of Jennifer's friends even gave blood, because they were eager to help out in any way possible. Abbett's family says they have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community and Jennifer's doctors. "The doctors are great and the nurses are great. It's been personal care,"Jennifer's uncle, Jeff Abbett says. "We couldn't ask for anything more." Abbett's family says the doctors' next major concern will be the risk of infection. They have also said it is likely Abbett will catch pnuemonia. A fund has been set up at Compass Banks for anyone who would like to donate money to help Jennifer's family during this tough time.
